Free Applications
If you are trying to sort out a PC, but have very little money to spend on software, there are loads of applications that do the same job as the big corporations but completely for free. Below are listed some of the applications that I use in my everyday life at home which can be installed for nothing.
- Open Office - A real alternative to Microsoft Office.
- Writer - Opens and saves Microsoft Word documents. Export to HTML and PDF, or save in OpenDocument format.
- Calc - Opens and saves Microsoft Excel spreadsheets. Export to PDF, or save in OpenDocument format.
- Impress - Opens and saves Microsoft PowerPoint presentations. Create Flash (.swf) versions of your presentations, or save in OpenDocument format.
- Draw - Create Flash (.swf) versions of your work. Save your graphics in the OpenDocument format.
- Base - Opens and saves Microsoft Access databases. Includes a full version of the HSQL database engine, storing data in XML files. It can also access dBASE files natively for simple database work.
OpenDocument format is the new international standard for office documents. This XML based format means you are not tied in to a single package as you can access your file from any OpenDocument compliant software.
Paint.NET - Image and photo manipulation software designed to be used on computers that run Windows. It supports layers, unlimited undo, special effects, and a wide variety of useful and powerful tools.
GIMP - Image Manipulation Program.
MediaPortal - A real alternative to Microsoft Media Center. Allows you to listen to your favorite music & radio, watch and store your videos and DVDs, view, schedule and record live TV as a digital video recorder and much much more.
DeepBurner - CD and DVD burning package. The free version allows you to burn data CD's/DVD's, burn audio CDs and create and burn ISO images.
DeepRipper - Capable of converting audio CD tracks to a first-grade MP3, OGG or WAV files.
