Free Portable Applications
If you work between many computers, you cannot guarantee that the aplications you need will be on all of them. To overcome this, buy yourself a decent sized USB pen drive (>2GB) and install a nifty program call PortableApps. This is simply a launcher for other portable applications.
When you download the launcher it comes in three flavours:
The Base edition is just the essentials of the application (menu, backup, etc) so it is less than 1MB to download and install.
The Standard edition comes bundled with the following software and runs comfortably from a 512MB drive:
- ClamWin Portable (antivirus)
- Mozilla Firefox - Portable Edition (web browser)
- Gaim Portable (instant messaging)
- OpenOffice.org Portable (office suite)
- Sudoku Portable (puzzle game)
- Mozilla Sunbird - Portable Edition (calendar/task manager)
- Mozilla Thunderbird - Portable Edition (email client)
The Lite edition uses AbiWord Portable (word processor) instead of OpenOffice.org Portable and runs comfortably from a 256MB drive.
